Botanic Gardens near TruroExclusive Visits For Lasting Impressions

Situated at the head of the Fal Estuary, in the heart of Cornwall, close to the historic city of Truro, Tregothnan has been the home of the Boscawen family since 1300 and the garden surrounding this historic home has been of lasting interest to successive generations. As a private botanic garden and arboretum, Tregothnan is unequalled offering scale, diversity, rare collections, sweeping vistas and secluded groves.

The garden is presently managed by Head Gardener, Jonathon Jones, who trained at The Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh and has been at Tregothnan for three years. Current developments include the restoration of the original Myrtle Avenue, and the reclamation of a sunken garden, with plants collected during Jonathon’s South American expeditions. A collection of rare conifers from Edinburgh Royal Botanic Garden has been planted and plants from a Chinese expedition contribute to the international appeal of Tregothnan.

Although not open to the public on a regular basis, Jonathon is pleased to offer Tregothnan Private Garden Visits where interested parties can enjoy this unique environment in peace and tranquillity. Private Visits will be personally escorted by Jonathon who will be delighted to discuss the history of the garden as well as current collections and future plans. Jonathon’s knowledge and horticultural skills are well known and his credentials are such that one year at the RHS Spring Show in London, the garden won every rhododendron specie class entered and a Tregothnan hybrid camellia, ‘Canon Boscawen’ was singled out for a Garden Merit Award.

Home to endangered plants and treesThe Garden covers approximately 50 acres (20 hectares). Current developments include the restoration of the original Myrtle Avenue, and the reclamation of a sunken garden, with plants collected during the Head Gardener's South American expeditions. A collection of rare and unusual conifers from Edinburgh Royal Botanic Garden has been planted and also plants from a Chinese expedition, giving the Garden a truly international feel.

As a private Botanic garden and arboretum, Tregothnan in unequalled. Its collection is well known to the botanical world and it is home to many unique specimens. Indeed, it is an official 'safe site' for the keeping of rare or endangered trees from all over the world, holding larger specimens of some 'Red Book' endangered plants and trees than any remaining in the wild.

Your visit will provide you with a lasting impression of a unique environment - please enjoy the scale, diversity, beauty and peace of Tregothnan Garden.
