Sir Richard Edgcumbe of Cotehele built a new home in his deer park at Mount Edgcumbe in 1547-53. Miraculously the walls of his red stone Tudor House survived a direct hit by bombs in 1941 and it was restored by the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe between 1958-64. |
| It is now beautifully furnished with family possessions, including paintings by Sir Joshua Reynolds, Gerard Edema and William van der Velde, Irish bronze age horns, 16th century tapestries and 18th century Chinese and Plymouth porcelain. |

The Earl's Garden was created beside the House in the 18th century. Ancient and rare trees including a 400 year old lime, a splendid Lucombe oak, and a Mexican pine, are set amidst classical garden houses and an exotic Shell Seat. Colourful flowers and heather grace the re-created Victorian East Lawn terrace, which has spectacular views over Plymouth Sound. |

Planning Your Visit |
You are strongly recommended to visit the House and Earl's Garden first - it's at the top of the hill - and then walk or coach down to the Formal Gardens and the Orangery Restaurant. Coach drivers' maps will be provided when your booking is confirmed. Toilets: These are available at Barrow Car Park, in the Entrance Hall of the House and at the Orangery Restaurant. Refreshments: There is an 18 seat Tea Room in the House and a 100 seat Restaurant in the Orangery. How long?: Allow two hours to visit the House and Earl's Garden and a further 1½ hours if you wish to explore the Formal Gardens and have refreshments. We are often fully booked for 11.00 a.m. slots so an early afternoon time is a good idea.
Disabled access: Please contact us in advance for help with wheelchair
access to the House. There is a small lift in the House. A Guide Book is available (£3.00 + 60p p&p)
